Two goals first-half goals were enough as Patrick Reichelt’s Melaka United prevail over Joshua Grommen’s Petaling Jaya as it ended 2-1 in a match that pitted both Philippine Azkals in both clubs’ Malaysia Super League opener in Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca.
Hosts Melaka United got mounted a comfortable advantage with two unanswered goals in the first half as Kosovo Albanian Liridon Krasniqi produced a spectacular opener in the 35th minute while Brazilian striker Casagrande added the second goal off a header two minutes before halftime.
Petaling Jaya tried to claw and give it a fight in the second-half as they pulled a goal back with Barathkumar Ramaloo scoring three minutes before the hour mark, but an equalizer wasn’t meant to be with the home team kicking off its campaign with a win.
The Azkals of both opposing teams, Patrick Reichelt [formerly of Ceres-Negros] and Joshua Grommen [formerly of Davao Aguilas], suited up as starters during the match.
However, a sad news for neutral Filipino fans following both players in this fixture as Josh Grommen dislocated his shoulder in the 65th minute, but was able to soldier on for the whole match. He will undergo further assessment by the team doctor if he can suit up for the next game.
Melaka United will next face PKNS FC in an away fixture next Saturday, February 9 at 9:00 PM, while Petaling Jaya City will have their first home match against Selangor which kicks off on the same date and time [Malaysia has no time difference with the Philippines].
