Despite being on the receiving end of lopsided results, academy representatives of Filipino football club Bohemian SC gained invaluable experience, exposure, and learnings after being pitted against youth counterparts from the world’s biggest clubs.
The under-10 tournament held in the Netherlands from June 1 to 2 put Bohemian SC in a group where they battled against very tough teams of the most storied clubs in Europe.
Bohemian’s first assignment in the first stage of the group phase came against Belgian club KAA Gent which ended in 5-0 loss. This was followed by a match against Dutch amateur club SAB Breda which could have been the Filipinos’ best chance to get a result but the fixture ended in a narrow 1-0 loss.
What followed are probably the toughest challenges yet for the young academy as they faced a massive series of humps against the U-10 teams of Europe’s giant clubs, first against Ajax Amsterdam which ended 5-0. Inter Milan followed where the Nerazzurri won 4-0. The first group phase ended for Bohemian facing West Ham United where the London club emerged with a convincing 6-0 result.
The second stage of the group phase followed with a rematch against KAA Gent. This time, the Pinoys were able to get a monumental 0-0 draw against their much fancied opponents. However, the momentum cannot be maintained as a 2-0 loss followed at the hands of Dutch club BSV Boeimeer.
Another closely contested match that ended in a narrow 1-0 loss has been dealt by Total Soccer Cayman before rounding Group Stage 2 with a 4-0 loss against another Belgian giant KRC Genk.
Bohemian SC, coached by former Azkals Jason De Jong, ended its campaign on a high note with a sole win during the classification match against Dutch side and tournament hosts Rood-Wit, scoring two unanswered goals.
The final was eventually contested by Ajax and West Ham with the former winning by a 4-1 scoreline. Both finalists were faced by Bohemian in the group phase.
